A Promising Start to Victory

BC Blind Sports

As I left the BC Blind Sports’ office for the last time, I heard a final horn in my head, as if to signal the end of a hockey game.  I smiled and raised my arms victoriously.  I survived my six-week professional work experience.

In June and July 2023, I was a Communications Assistant for BC Blind Sports, a charitable organization that keeps blind and partially sighted British Columbians active and healthy through encouraging them to join sports or recreational activities and connecting them to healthy lifestyle resources.  There, I updated members with event announcements and summaries, improved web contents by proofreading and applying plain language, and increased understanding on blind sports through interviewing and writing articles on member athletes.

The practicum, a part of the Professional Communications Diploma program at Douglas College in New Westminster, BC, was a fulfilling experience for me as a sports fan and a writer.  It was also a promising step to reach a lifelong goal to work in the sports industry.  I could apply my knowledge gained from my courses during the practicum.  I was inspired and felt hopeful for my career path through interviewing blind athletes, who have faced and overcome struggles to build resiliency and become successful in doing what they love.  I can always recall their experience when I face challenges in my career path.

Learning about partnering sports associations and growing my professional network through working with BC Blind Sports prepare me for the next steps in my professional communications career.  I sincerely thank BC Blind Sports for the work experience.
