A Promising Start to Victory

Image
BC Blind Sports              As I left the BC Blind Sports ’ office for the last time, I heard a final horn in my head, as if to signal the end of a hockey game.   I smiled and raised my arms victoriously.   I survived my six-week professional work experience.           In June and July 2023, I was a Communications Assistant for BC Blind Sports, a charitable organization that keeps blind and partially sighted British Columbians active and healthy through encouraging them to join sports or recreational activities and connecting them to healthy lifestyle resources.   There, I updated members with event announcements and summaries, improved web contents by proofreading and applying plain language, and increased understanding on blind sports through interviewing and writing articles on member athletes.           The practicum, a part of...

Retrieved from an article on  thehockeywriters.com       Over 3.5 million Americans watched Canada defeating the United States 3-2 to win women's hockey gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics.  This is more viewers than any National Hockey League game televised in the U.S. this season. (Source:  theathletic.com )      Meanwhile, an average of 2.7 million Canadians watched the same game on any Canadian-based sports TV networks.  It had the highest viewership of all events in the Beijing Olympics.         These numbers show that women's hockey matters, even in the U.S. where hockey isn't the most watched sport.        Women's hockey has been growing Since it became an international competition in the 90s.  It became an Olympic event in 1998.  While Canada and the U.S. have always been dominant in this ...

My Two Favourite Websites

Image
One website I like is Light and Love Home , a global Christian charity organization that cares for the poor in underdeveloped countries.  Its services include building orphanages and schools, education sponsorships, and programs to provide sustainable family income.        .    The website's homepage begins with a frozen pane that shows the organization's logo, a main menu with drop-down options with a mouse hover, and a "Donate" button.  Below it is a photo of a family's home with the organization's tagline.  It goes on to display the most recent fundraising program, followed by its services, with each a brief description of each service accompanied by a "Learn more" link and a related photo.  Below it are testimonies of beneficiaries and ways to get involved.       Many pages of this website contain photos and short paragraphs.  The vast amount of white spaces makes the website easy to read....

Douglas College vs. Langara College

Image
Every  college or university's website is created uniquely to attract both perspective and current students.  Such a website informs current students about campus services and the school's news and events.  It also introduces perspective students to the school with virtual campus tours and online information session bookings reasons.  These features give them reasons beyond program curriculums or tuition cost to choose one school over another. Image from  purepng.com      Here are the website layout comparisons between the two colleges that I have attended:  Langara  and  Douglas .  They are two commonly-known public colleges in the Lower Mainland.  First are the features from each website, followed by my preference. Douglas College Link to COVID-19 information and updates on top row  Horizontal main menu with multiple columns of links appearing when hovering the mouse cursor Scrollable links with...

W3C and the Internet

Image
The Internet Icon, from  kindPNG.com      As I'm writing this blog post about the Internet, it is hard for me to picture a world without it.  And yet, my birth predated the existence of the World Wide Web.     Sir Tom Berners-Lee is credited to have invented the World Wide Web in 1989, according to the  World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) .  He is the Director of the W3C, which was founded in 1994.       The W3C is an international organization that sets the standards and guidelines for the Web.   its mission is to ensure the growth of the web by developing protocols and guidelines.  Some of its principles include allowing everyone to access information and communicate through the web regardless of culture, language, or other barriers.  Initiatives such as web accessibility and internationalization are introduced to support W...

Persisting Through Trials: 3 challenges and benefits of the pandemic

Yesterday was Blue Monday, the so-called "saddest day of the year."  Many may argue that we have been living in a "Blue Era" since early 2020 when the COVID-19 Pandemic hit.  Activity restrictions, social distancing, and adaptation to constant health regulation changes have dominated our daily lives and are part of our "new normal."    While some complained and rebelled against the new guidelines, others  adjusted and realized the benefits.     So what are the benefits of this pandemic, and how do you overcome the negative impacts?       1. We are more cautious about personal hygiene     Perhaps the biggest benefit of this pandemic is knowing the importance of personal hygiene.  Common health practices such as handwashing and covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze were followed loosely at best before the pandemic, but they are essential now as not only to keep ourselves healthy, but to prevent furt...
